Shaw's play "Pygmalion" diverges from the original myth by focusing more on social class issues and the impact of education and language on identity. Unlike the myth where Pygmalion falls in love with his creation, Shaw's play emphasizes the transformation of Eliza's character and her assertion of independence. Additionally, the ending of Shaw's play differs from the myth by leaving the audience with an ambiguous conclusion rather than a traditional happy ending.

In Greek mythology, Pygmalion, the king of Cyprus, found so much fault in womankind that he resolved to live unmarried. But after painstakingly sculpting a statue of a beautiful woman that he named Galatea, he came to regard his creation as so perfect that he fell in love with her. In 1913, Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw adapted the myth to modern-day England and used his play about a phonetics professor's efforts to refine the speech and manner of a cockney flower girl for life among the gentry as a platform for social critique, demonstrating the artificiality of class distinctions in turn-of-the-century British society. My Fair Lady was based on the myth of Pygmalion. The play 'Pygmalion' by GB Shaw was made into the musical. In the myth Pygmalion was a Greek sculptor who fell in love with a beautiful sculpture he had made. He implored Aphrodite/Venus to make the sculpture alive, which she did.
