During that time, Nicholas Biddle was the President of the Bank of the United States (also called the BUS). Jackson tended to dislike the BUS because he thought that it was another evidence of too much government power. So, he ordered the secretary of the treasury to stop depositing government money in Biddle's bank. Instead, the government revenues from taxes and land sales would go into new accounts in 89 different state banks. These soon became known as Jackson's "pet banks".
