The "Territory Northwest of the River Ohio," more commonly known as the Northwest Territory, had been created on July 13, 1787. Ohio became the 17th state on March 1, 1803. It was the first state to be created out of the Northwest Territory.

The Northwest Territory was divided into several states, including Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, and part of Minnesota. Ohio was the first state to be created from the Northwest Territory, achieving statehood on March 1, 1803.
Illinois was part of the Virginia Colony until the Revolutionary ended. After that, it was part of the Northwest Territory. In 1809. the Illinois Territory was created.
On July 4, 1800, in preparation for Ohio's statehood, the Indiana Territory was carved out, reducing the Northwest Territory to the size of Ohio, to prepare for statehood. The Northwest Territory went out of existence when Ohio was admitted as a state on March 1, 1803
