about chauth and sardeshmukhi

chauth (meaning one-fourth) = kind of protection money charged by Shivaji in territories adjoining his empire, normally 1/4 th of what they paid to their kings and feudal lords.

sardesmukhi = charged normally at 1/10th as land revenue by Shivaji, a tribute money being a former Chief/ feudal lord.

Also, Sardeshmukhi was a charge equal to one-tenth of the land revenue which a hereditary Deshmukh, in the time of the Mughals, kept to himself in return for the collection of the revenue and the maintenance of Law and Order in a territory allotted to him.

Chauth and Sardeshmukhi were two types of taxes imposed by the Marathas. Chauth was essentially an annual tax of 25% levied on territories under Maratha control, while Sardeshmukhi was an additional 10% tax collected from territories within the Deccan region. Both taxes were a part of the Maratha revenue system and played a significant role in financing the Maratha empire.
