There are a lot of different steel alloys and they have several different chemicals so you cant really say steel is iron and _______. This is really a trick question because no matter what you say you are always wrong.

  • Stainless steel (chromium, nickel)
    • AL-6XN
    • Alloy 20
    • Celestrium
    • Marine grade stainless
    • Martensitic stainless steel
    • Surgical stainless steel (chromium, molybdenum, nickel)
  • Silicon steel (silicon)
  • Tool steel (tungsten or manganese)
  • Bulat steel
  • Chromoly (chromium, molybdenum)
  • Crucible steel
  • Damascus steel
  • HSLA steel
  • High speed steel
  • Maraging steel
  • Reynolds 531
  • Wootz steel

chiefly iron and a small percentage of carbon and even smaller amounts of manganese, or chromium, vanadium or tungsten. Carbon composition by weight can be between 0.2% and 2.1% depending on the grade. Above 2.1% the alloy is now called cast iron.

What word is used to describ a metal made by combining other metals?

I think you're looking for "an alloy." According to the Wikipedia page, "An alloy is a partial or complete solid solution of one or more elements in a metallic matrix." But as I've learned in a non-scientific sense, when you melt a bunch of metals and mix 'em together, you've got an alloy.

How do you tell the difference between austentic steel and stainless steel?

Austenitic is not a type of steel, it is a description for steel and many stainless steels can be austenitic. Austenitic steels means that they contain 7% or more chromium or nickel as their major alloy elements and they have the highest corrosion resistance but are not heat treatable.

What is Carbon steel and stainless steel?

Carbon steel is an iron alloy with less than 2% carbon, no chromium, and contains copper and magnesium not more than 0.6% Stainless steel is an iron alloy with less than 2% carbon and it contains chromium and it's resistive to corrosion

What is the difference between steel stainless steel and aluminum?

Steel is a composition of (primarily) Carbon and Iron. The more carbon, the harder, less ductile the steel. Stainless steel is Carbon, Iron and Chromium, that is galvinized (diped into zinc, which corrodes the outer layer of stainless steel,) making it stainless.

What are the properties of an alloy?

An alloy is a metal that is composed of two or more different elements. For example, Brass is Copper that has been alloyed with Zinc (meaning it has has some Zinc added to it). Stainless Steel is Iron that has been alloyed with Chromium, and often Nickel.Alloys all have different properties depending on the different elements they are composed of, and how much of each element is present. An alloy like Stainless Steel is designed for corrosion resistance, whereas an alloy like Inconel (made from Nickel, Chromium, and small amounts of several other elements) is designed to be able to operate at high temperatures. One property that almost all alloys have is that their melting point is lower than the pure form of their base metal. For example, Stainless Steel has a melting point that is lower than pure iron, and Brass has a melting point lower than pure copper.

What is harder alloy or steal?

An alloy is a mixture of two or more elements, at least one of which is a metal, and where the resulting material has metallic properties. Steel is an alloy. It is a combination of iron (metallic) and other elements. Usually the iron is combined with carbon (non metallic) but can be combined also with molybdenum, manganese, chromium, or nickel. The proportion of elements added to the iron will affect the hardness of the steel. The greater the amount will increase hardness.

What is a mixture of 2 or more elements called when 1 is a metal?

An alloy An alloy. One example is steel, which is an alloy of iron and carbon.

What item is an alloy?

It is a mixture containing two or more elements, e.g. Iron and other elements like carbon make steel.

What material made of two or more elements at least one of which is metal?

An alloy. Two types: substitutional (brass and bronze), or interstitial (steel).

Why is stainless steel more resistant to a chemical charge then regular steel?

The addition of small amounts of certain elements to the alloy, in particular the metal chromium.

What is combine of two or more metals?

Two or more metals, when properly combined (usually combined in liquid form before cooling) are called an "Alloy." stainless steel is probably the most ubiquitous alloy out there, it contains varying amounts of iron, carbon, chromium, nickel, and sometimes other more rare metals.

What does it mean if a metal is a alloy?

The basic answer is that an Alloy is more than one metal combined to create another metal. EG: Steel Bronze Solder Most jewelry "gold" Most Jewelry "silver"

Can you have an example of alloys?

An alloy is a solution of metals and/or combined with one or more non-metals. It is a solution because one metal (solid) dissolves in another metal (solid) and may contain other elements (solid) as well. An alloy retains the properties common to metal, but is not pure metal.Examples:Brass (copper and zinc)Steel (iron and carbon)Bronze (copper and tin)

What is the difference between brass and copper?

Copper is an element, and a metal. Brass is an alloy of the metallic elements copper and zinc. A link is provided below.
