Starting with NaCl, Sodium and Chlorine have a large difference in electronegativity, which means in the polarity of water will be able to break the polar NaCl bond. In ethanol, C2H6O, there is enough difference in electronegativity between the Carbon and Oxygen for the polarity of the water molecule to break this bond. In CaCO3, it is the Carbon and Oxygen bonds again the break. This is far less soluble than the other two molecules, but the same reason still applies.

For recrystallisation, try something non-polar to wash your crystals, like hexane. If you were wanting to recrystalise the calcium carbonate, ice-cool distilled water would be fine and wouldn't drastically decrease your % yeild.

Why is sodium chloride not suitable for recrystallization?

The crystallization/recrystallization of sodium chloride from water solutions is frequently used.

What is recrystallization in organic chemistry?

Recrystallization is a procedure aimed at improving the quality of an impure solid compound by making its saturated solution in a suitable solvent, whereupon the pure compound separates out as crystals (with time), leaving behind the impurities in the solution. The crystals so obtained maybe collected by filtration.

Is benzhydrol suitable for recrystallization of bezhydrol?

Yes, benzhydrol can be suitable for recrystallizing benzhydrol. Recrystallization is a common technique used to purify solid compounds by dissolving them in a suitable solvent and allowing them to slowly crystallize out. It is important to choose a solvent in which the compound is more soluble at high temperatures and less soluble at low temperatures to achieve successful recrystallization.

Explain why crystallisation would not be suitable for purifying water?

An ideal crystallization solvent should be unreactive, inexpensive, and have low toxicity. It is also important that the solvent have relatively low boiling point as its best if the solvent readily evaporate from the solid once recovered. For most organic compounds, water is not a good recrystallization solvent.

When doing a solvent pair recrystallization which of the following pairs will work ethanol and water methylene chloride and water dimethylformamide and diethyl ether?

Ethanol and water is a suitable solvent pair for recrystallization. Methylene chloride and water, as well as dimethylformamide and diethyl ether, are not typically used together as solvent pairs for recrystallization due to their different chemical properties and solubility characteristics.

Will water purifying tablets clean urine?

Well, first lets brake down your question... Urine coming out of the body is just about sterile unless you have a urinary tract infection (More so in males than females, because of the design of reproductive organ). So urine is "clean" already. The classic water purifying tablet contain iodine which wipes out bacteria, but your urine won't have much bacteria in it to begin with. The problem with drinking urine is is the concentration of unwanted minerals. Drinking it puts strain on the Kidneys. To answer your question, unless you have a purifying tablet that collects those minerals and gets rid of them, no purifying tablets will not make urine suitable for drinking.

Should you drink salt water or wait for rain to drink if you are lost at sea?

Drinking salt water will only increase dehydration. It should be avoided at all costs unless suitable purifying aids have been used.
