Exodus chapter 1 begins by listing the patriarchs of the seventy Israelites said to have gone into Egypt. Within a few centuries, the Israelites had multiplied to such an extent that the land was full of them and the Egyptians began to worry because the Israelites exceeded their own number, with potential consequences if they sided against the Egyptians in war. So the Egyptians, in spite of already being outnumbered, enslaved the Israelites. The king also told his people to kill all the newborn Israelite boys.
One young Israelite boy was Moses, grandson of Kohath, whom Genesis says came into Egypt with the others. Since Kohath is said to have lived 133 years and his son Amran lived 137 years, Moses was born sometime before 270 years after the arrival in Egypt. Because of the edict to kill all Israelite baby boys, Moses' mother placed him in a waterproofed basket and hid him in the bulrushes along the river. Here, the Pharoah's daughter found Moses and took him as her own.
When Moses was grown, he saw an Egyptian hit an Israelite, and killed the Egyptian. Moses fled to Another Country, where he married Zipporah, who gave him a son, Gershom. Meanwhile, the Pharoah who ordered the slaughter of the infants had died, and at last, God had respect unto the Israelites.
