Dr. Jose Rizal was made the foremost national hero of the Philippines by the American colonial government in the early 20th century due to his writings that advocated for reform and independence from Spanish colonial rule. Rizal's peaceful and intellectual approach to the struggle for Filipino rights resonated with both Filipino nationalists and the American authorities, who saw him as a non-threatening figure to elevate as a symbol of Filipino independence while under American rule. Rizal's martyrdom at the hands of the Spanish colonial government also added to his reputation as a national hero.
