Why do miners use light?

Because there is no light in an underground mine- you have to use artificial lights, such as a miner's cap lamp. It allows you to see what you are doing, but have your hands free to work. They have atificial lighting in the marjority of mines strung to the roof (the top of the tunnel) however, at the "face" (working areas) there is very little light from these as there is no light reflected then a head lamp is used as it shines directly in the dircetly the minors head is facing.

Is a clothesline a fixed or movable pulley?

A clothesline can be a simple line strung between to upright fixed points, or it can be woven through a pulley system to allow the user to stand at a fixed position to use it.

Why are stringed lights wired in a parallel circuit instead of a simple circuit?

Tree lights have parallel circuits because the rest of the lights will remain on if one goes out. Imagine trying to find the one bad bulb on a string of lights if one were to go out. This way, only one light goes out, so it can easily be found and replaced. Hope this helps!

Give an example of thermal expansion?

Electrical cables that are strung from pole to pole are made of metal (usually aluminum or copper, in the U.S.). In hot weather, the cables get longer, which causes them to sag lower than they do in the winter. When the distance between poles is long, it can be pretty obvious.

Do pulleys generate some of the force for you?

No. Conservation of energy shows that any system can only deliver as much energy as is put in. In reality, all systems are less than 100% efficient, so any practical system will waste some (or much) of its input energy. But a pulley system can *multiply* force. Take a setup with a one-sheaf (wheel) pulley at one end, and a one-sheaf pulley at the other. Correctly strung, you will find that pulling two feet of rope will lift a load only one foot. If it were perfectly frictionless, you could draw on the rope with a 50-pound pull and lift a 100-pound load. It may seem that you've done magic with the rope - it's lifting 100 pounds, so how strong must it be? The answer is that there are two sections of rope supporting the load between the sheaves, so each section only bears (100/2) = 50 pounds. This is why you'll often see cranes with multiple-sheaf pulleys - the winding gear must wind *a lot* of steel rope to life or lower the load, but the rope can be much thinner than if a single rope was used.
