Try checking the neutral safety switch. This switch is the one in automatic transmissions that makes the backup lights "flip" on when going from park to drive as you go through the gears. When my neutral safety switch shorted my backup lights stayed on constantly.
This is usually caused because the stoplight switch or the switch that is connected to the brake pedal is burned out. On these vehicles when you press the pedal you can here a click in the trans shifter. If you dont, then i would look at replacing the switch. These switches are used on most vehicles as safety to make sure the occupant is pressing the brake before shifting from park to reverse or drive. Drive to 2nd and 1st gears do not count.
No a neutral safety switch allows your car to come out of park.

I have a 1998 Chevy 2500. I would like to know how to install the brake switch, and does the switch affect tran from park to drive in shifting?
the neutral / backup light switch is on the side of the transmission. You can cut and splice them.
Park and Neutral Position Switch
