The first few Africans that were brought to the US for labor were actually treated as indentured servants and eventually owned property. Slavery eventually took its place and did not only affect Africans, but also Native Americans and any people imported from nations that were not Christians.
The system of forced labor that led to the importing of African labor was called the slave trade. It was abolished in the United States on 2 March, 1807, making it illegal to import slaves into the US.
Slavery was the system that brought many Africans to the Southern colonies for forced labor. The Irish were also used as slaves in the colonies and elsewhere in the New World.
