Salat (Prayer in Arabic) is one of the five pillars in Islam. Prayer is five times, per day, scheduled on specific timings according to the Lunar(moon) Calender. It is obligatory. The direction or Kiblah is towards the Kaaba.
Prayers are fulfilled in Mosques. It is preferred for Women to pray at home, and it is preferred for Men to pray in the Mosque, with other men, and one man, mostly an Imam, which may be analogous to a familiar role like a Priest in Christianity leads the prayer, which is called Jamat. Jamat is the togetherness or unification of the individuals, while praying. One may not go ahead of the leader in prayer.
