The Tertiary time period lasted from the end of the Mesozoic 65.5 million years ago (mya) until about 2.588 mya at the beginning of the Quaternary. It is divided into two periods. The Paleogene is the first, lasting from 65.5 mya until 23 mya. The second was the Neogene period, which lasted from 23 mya until 2.588 mya.
