The gold standard test to diagnose abnormalities of the oesophagus is an gastroscopy which involves a fine tube like camera being passed down the oesophagus into the stomach which enables the physician to physically see the lining of the GI tract down to the second part of the duodenum, this test takes only a matter of minutes enabling rapid diagnosis, patients can be sedated or have a local anaesthetic throat spray.
A barium swallow is an alternative where the patients are asked to swallow a radiopaique solution and x-rays are taken as the fluid passes through the GI tract, this can show thickening and scarring of the lining of the oesophagus and stomach though does not show why the scarring is present and often leads to a gastroscopy if any abnormalities are seen.
