The Great Eastern -
She was an iron sailing steam ship and the largest ever built at the time of her launch in 1858.
Her dimensions were truly gigantic, and originally named 'Leviathan'. Her designer, Isambard Kingdom BRUNEL, knew her affectionately as 'the great babe'. He died shortly after her launch in 1858.
She was built to take passengers to Australia (capcity 4,000 passengers) and to be suitable for use as a troop carrier. Ports wtih coal depots were rare and expensive, so she was designed with a coal capacity to last an entire round voyage, and also to carry large amounts of cargo.
It was intended that she surpass the clipper ship's dominant position in the Australia trade.
The Bangor
Built under the presidential term of Thomas Jefferson and sometimes referred to as the Clermont, the North River steamship was the first commercial steamship. Built in 1807 It was created based on the partnership between inventor/entrepreneur, Robert Fulton and investor/politician, Robert Livingston.
The S. S. Great Western was a paddle-wheel steamship that was built specifically to cross the Atlantic. Her maiden voyage was in 1838, going to New York City from Bristol.
St Francis Xavier built 1856 - 1860
The Greek "Titans" were the parents of the Gods, and were giants; the word "titanic" means very large. The White Star Lines steamship was the largest ever built, so "Titanic" was an appropriate name.
