The Great Eastern -

She was an iron sailing steam ship and the largest ever built at the time of her launch in 1858.

Her dimensions were truly gigantic, and originally named 'Leviathan'. Her designer, Isambard Kingdom BRUNEL, knew her affectionately as 'the great babe'. He died shortly after her launch in 1858.

She was built to take passengers to Australia (capcity 4,000 passengers) and to be suitable for use as a troop carrier. Ports wtih coal depots were rare and expensive, so she was designed with a coal capacity to last an entire round voyage, and also to carry large amounts of cargo.

It was intended that she surpass the clipper ship's dominant position in the Australia trade.
