There is an Atlantic Ocean current that if a ship gets into it it will carry it directly to the East coast from England. In 1604 they didn't know that there was a west coast and how large North American really was and the King had given individuals and companies land grants for VA. and from there they spread out along the coastline.
The 13 colonies only developed along the Eastern coast and not father inland because much of the land was claimed by the Netherlands.
