The Confederate defeat at Vicksburg was important because it closed off the Mississippi River to the Confederacy. It divided the eastern Confederacy from Texas, Arkansas, and Louisiana, depriving it of men, horses, and war material.
Vicksburg is located at a strategic point on the Mississippi River. It is in a defensible position, difficult to attack with high bluffs overlooking an extreme bend in the river. Boats had to slow down in order to navigate the treacherous turn. Cannons, well positioned, could destroy any enemy boats within range, and it was difficult for Union gunboats to successfully pass by that point. The Confederates used the Mississippi to ferry reinforcements and materiel to their troops. Grant bypassed the trap by crossing over to the opposite bank, marching his troops below the town, outside of the range of the guns, and recrossing the river, marching up behind the city on the landward side, and cutting it off from supplies, starving them out. Once Vicksburg surrendered, not only were the Rebels cut off from fresh troops and supplies, but the Union was then able to use the river for its own purposes, making it a communications conduit for its own forces. Grant's success opened the way to Sherman's campaigns in 1864.
It meant whoever controlled Vicksburg controlled the Mississippi and whoever controlled the Mississippi would eventually win the war.
