Everybody always has a choice. Some who came to the New World came for religious reasons and would have had to leave their religious group if they did not come over. Some criminals had the choice of prison and maybe death if they wanted to stay in England. But also, a large number came to the New World with the hope of a better life and a better chance to make a living.

Under the auspices of the Spanish crown, their explorers and conquistadors came to the New World to stake out territorial claims. This was the some of the same reasons the English, Dutch and French explorers came to the New World for.
