Primogeniture is the common law right of the first born son to inherit the estate of his ancestors to the exclusion of his younger siblings. It was intended to maintain the estate intact rather than parcel it off to each child and eventually diminishing the holdings.
Younger sons had to go into the military or the ministry in order to make their own living. Some became adventurers who traveled the seas to new places to make their fortunes. It motivated many younger sons of the gentry to seek their fortunes in exploration and colonization. Many of the plantations of colonial America were founded by younger sons who through the system of slavery attempted to recreate the grand life they enjoyed as children of aristocrats living in the grand estates in Old England. Daughters had to marry, enter a convent or live at the courtesy of their eldest brother.
A related legal principal was fee tail or an entailed estate. Under common law the recipient of the estate by primogeniture could not sell it or freely give it away during his life nor after his death by will. The estate was said to be entailed. Fee tails were intended to keep the family land intact and in the family line, generally through the male line. Some may remember the popular Downton Abbey series on PBS was based on an entailed estate.
There were different variations of entailment at various times and in different places. Where primogeniture was not the practice an entailment could be restricted to male heirs or to female heirs.
