Side note: Jan Karski, a Pole who attempted to alert the world about the horrors of Auschwitz years later, was in Oswiecim with his horse cavalry awaiting the German army's arrival on the day of the invasion. Ironically Oswiecim, a small village in Upper Silesia, Poland, would be used as the spot where Auschwitz would be built.
