Franklin was raised Calvinist, but briefly visited and contributed to a Presbytarian Church (a friend of his was the minister, and he endorsed the "civilizing" impact of religion). In his early 20s, Franklin briefly adopted a stark version of Deism, in no part due to his reading of popular magazines of the day. Later, and for the rest of his life, he frequently celebrated the "Providence" of a Creator God, and worked from a liturgy and belief statement he wrote for himself. The best description of Franklin's beliefs may be that he was a "theological perspectivist," i.e. he believed that those religions which best served to comfort, encourage, and enlighten humanity were those which came the closest to ideal, but that, because of the infinite mystery of the Divine, none was literally true. Another answer from our community:No. Christianity was totally opposed to the mystery religions at its beginning and should still be. The mystery religions were a form of idol worship, sun worship and other pagan practices. They were called "mystery" religions because some of their practices were kept secret by those who participated in them. John 18:20 says, "Jesus answered him, I spake openly to the world; I ever taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither the Jews always resort; and in secret have I said nothing."
A:All religions, of necessity, build a sense of mystique around their gods. If a religion is too simple it becomes easy to dispute the truth of that religion or its rituals, and it does not survive. The ancient Egyptian religion involved far greater mysteries than does the modern Christian religion.
