The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (commonly called the "Mormon" Church) was organized on April 6, 1830 in Palmyra, New York by Joseph Smith, Jr. Church members believe that he was visited by Jesus Christ and instructed on how to restore the original first century Christian Church to the earth.
Correction: Joseph Smith was visited by the Jesus Christ and the Heavenly Father and told to begin the gospel in the latter days but the Angel Moroni was the one that actually instructed him and brought him to to gold plates(Which is now known as the book of Mormon.)
