The so called "Tanker War" fought in the original "Persian Gulf War" in the 1980's between Iran and Iraq was in the Persian Gulf...that's the name of it.

The Korean War and Vietnam War were fought to stop communist aggression. That was clearly stated by Presidents Truman for Korea and Ike, JFK, LBJ, Nixon, and maybe Ford for Vietnam. The US was involved with the 1980-1988 Gulf War in the Persian Gulf during Saddam Hussain's war with Iran...in fact the US Navy warship USS Stark was hit by an Iraqi missile during that war, killing about 30 US Sailors...US interests were to keep and maintain a safe passage thru the Persian Gulf during that long and bloody war.
