There is a constant famine all over South Africa, and that is why thousands of people there die each year. There was a disease going around called mildew which made the potatoes all black and mushy so nobody could eat them or they would be poisoned The disease was not called Mildew, it was called The Blight (Phytophthora infestans). The potato famine was caused by a fungi called potato blight. after just days from coming out of the ground, the potato's would be slimy, black, and rotten.
Nothing, they migrated to Canada because of the potato famine, and they had no belongings.
Most settlers that traveled to the new world came because of overpopulation, health issues (plagues, potato famine, etc), and very commonly due to religious persecution.
