To beat competition from other Imperialists, the Standard Treaty was imposed by Britain on controlled territories in Africa. The Royal Niger company was commissioned in 1886 to administer the economic development of the Niger River basin. The treaty was used for all the tribal chiefs and was reminiscent of a standard form letter.
