In the field of astronomy, Monk Yixing was the first to scientifically measure the length of the sun's shadow and the altitude of the North Pole.Much of the knowledge in these and other fields could be passed along thanks to the invention of block printing. This made it possible for more and more people to read. As a result, literacy rates soared, and lower-class citizens had a better chance of being able to pass the civil service examination.
