Best Answer

The US won the Spanish American war, and Puerto Rico was part of the war loot. Spain ceded or as a result of the war was forced to transfer the island to the US. At that point in time Puerto Rico had achieved an autonomical form of Government, similar to what it has now with the US. But was still an overseas territory or colonial enclave of Spain, similar again to the current status with the US. The similarities of both situations for the Island and it's people are many.
