The British set the White House on fire in 1814. There was another fire in the West Wing in 1929 when Hoover was president.
It was on December 24, 1929 while Hoover was President. It did severe damage to the West Wing and to Hoover's oval office but dud not affect the main part of the White House. It was caused by a defective chimney flue in a fire place.

In 1929, when Herbert Hoover was President, there was a major fire in the West Wing that destroyed the oval office, but did not affect the main White House.

The second major fire was in 1929 on Christmas Eve, when the West Wing was gutted by a major fire. The oval office had to be be completely rebuilt. The cause of the fire was an overheated flue in an open fireplace in the northwest corner of the wing.
Calvin Coolidge had two pet raccoons when he was in the White House.
