While there were several actions that took part in ending communism in Poland, there are two distinguishable people that are often credited with this. These two people include Lech Walesa and Pope John Paul II.
One major cause to the demise of communism in Poland was the election of a Polish Cardinal as the new Catholic Pope. His ability to talk freely about the political affairs going on in his home country, with fear of any Soviet intervention encouraged others in Poland to do the same. Another source of problems for the Polish Communist Party was the growing strength of the trade unions in Poland. Previously, the Government could downplay the religious unrest in Poland. Now with a Polish Pope, this was not so easy. Also, traditionally, eastern European Trade Unions were under the strict control of the Government. The trade unions in the northern seaport cities of Poland were able to exercise their "normal" rights and ignore threats from the communist Party.
