The primary reason the Allies overcome the advantages the Axis powers held before the U.S. entered the war was the addition of the United States and its enormous industrial economic capabilities to the Allied side. The United States was able to generate a level of production of material and manpower that the Axis simply could not match. Also, the Allies were fortunate that, in 1942, the Axis suffered some major reversals on the battlefield. Specifically, the British defeated the Germans in North Africa at the Battle of El Alamein, the Russians won the Battle of Stalingrad (begun in 1942, and ended in 1943), and the Americans won the battle of Midway in the Pacific, smashing the Japanese carrier forces. These battlefield victories halted the Axis advance and allowed time for the economic superiority of the Allied nations to come to bear.
