Roughly speaking, the number of protons plus the number of neutrons. To be precise, the Atomic Mass is defined as the mass in atomic mass units; an atomic mass unit is 1/12 of the mass of a carbon-12 atom. This atomic mass unit is approximately equal to the mass of a proton or neutron. However, protons and neutrons don't have exactly the same mass; also, when these particles get together, there is a so-called "mass deficit".
