Brown discharge during a period is not uncommon. It happens to most, if not all of us though we may not notice it. Rather than fresh red blood, what you are seeing is old blood, which turns a brownish color.
As for the length of your period, that can vary from person to person and even month to month for the same person, though I do not know what is "normal" for you. A friend of mine used to get her period for over 2 weeks, while another's lasted only 3 days.
