When one refers to evolution, they are generally referring to evolutionary biology (or biological evolution). They are the same thing. Evolution (in science) is essentially the study of change in organisms (adaptation, symbiosis, microevolution, marcoevolution, etc.). Evolution, put plainly, means change. If something evolves, it means it changed. We commonly refer to "evolution" as meaning something has developed further and/or better. However this is not necessarily the case. With natural selection, traits that are randomly produced either get discarded or get favored, and that gene is passed on to the next generation (should that organism reproduce). It is a very slow process, and change happens at very small levels. An organism with a certain gene isn't going to give birth to a dramatically different looking creature. That just isn't the way it works.

No one was around to observe when most of the evolutionary splits are believed to have occurred so no one documented them to establish as a known fact that that was how the split occurred. Also - theories remain theories until proven via experiments. It's rather difficult to craft an experiment to test natural evolution over any human time scale, although a limited number of experiments have been conducted via forced evolution of some species with very short life cycles.

Through evolution, organisms have developed mechanims to cope with free radicals and dispel their harmful effects. However, the detrimental effects of free radicals on cells eventually overcomes these coping mechanisms as the organism ages, eventually resulting in death. You may ask why evolution hasn't taken a step further and developed a never ending mechanism to deal with the free radical problem. The answer lies in the properties of evolution itself. Selective pressures on species only acts on individuals at the reproductive stage of life. Natural selection of an individual that lives longer over an individual that doesn't live as long wouldn't take place as both are able to pass on their genes.
