Wesley was an Anglican clergyman who was concerned with the Church of England moving too far away from its Protestant roots back into Catholicism. He, aided by his brother Charles therefore formed a group who met to worship and studied scripture methodically. They became derogatively known by critics as 'methodists' but after Wesley's death the group grew and became the Methodist Church of today.
