The Colosseum was built on flat area on the floor of a low valley between the Caelian, Esquiline and Palatine and Velia Hills. An artificial lake which had been created by the emperor Nero had to be drained and filled. Local water streams were canalised. The lake had been fed by a water source from the foundation of the Temple of the Divine Claudius on the Caelian. Thus, the local streams had to be canalised. Concrete was used to provide a solid foundation for the seating (which had a concrete shell).
Underneath the partly brick and partly wooden floor of the arena (which wa86 × 54 m., 272x157 ft.) where the gladiatorial fights and the animal hunts were performed there was a hypogeum (which means underground). This was a complex underground structure with 12 curved tunnels on the sides of a central passageway. The gladiators and caged animals were housed there prior to the show. It also stored machinery and props for sceneries. On four of the tunnels there were 80 shafts with hoists to lift machinery and the animals up to the arena.
The hypogeum had separate entrances:
· Tunnels underneath the central axis of the Colosseum gave access to both ends of the central passageway of the hypogeum. They were used to bring in machinery and the animals.
· Two monumental entrances gave direct access to the arena for the entry in great pomp for the gladiators. They were also used for animals which were too heavy to be hoisted from the understructure.
· The attendants to the game gained access to the arena though open entrances on a tunnel which run underneath the bottom ring of the seating. This tunnel was also used by the senators to reach a platform reserved for them without having to mix with the crowd.
No, there isn't sand on the floor of the colosseum because there is no floor. What was once was the floor is gone. When you visit it you look down into what was under the floor originally. When the Romans used the colosseum they could flood the floor to have sea battles.
340 arches are in the colosseum that's almost 80 arches on each floor!

The Colosseum's floor was made of a combination of wood and sand. The wood was used to construct the substructure, while the sand was spread on top to absorb the blood and prevent the arena from becoming slippery during gladiatorial games.
If you mean the floor of the Colosseum, it was 287 feet long and 180 feet wide.

Yes, the Roman Colosseum had a subsystem of basements. These included prisoner cells and animal pens. There were trap doors in the floor of the Colosseum so wild animals could be let loose. These rooms are now visible in the ruins of the Colosseum, since the floor has collapsed. See this picture: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/be/Colosseum.jpg
A Roman Colosseum typically contains seating tiers where spectators could watch gladiatorial contests, animal hunts, and other public spectacles. It also had underground chambers where gladiators and animals were held before their performances. The Colosseum was a massive amphitheater used for entertainment and could accommodate tens of thousands of people.
The main floor of the Coliseum in Rome consisted of a wooden floor covered with sand. The term arena refers to the sand that covered the floor.

The Colosseum did not have an orchestra. An orchestra was a part of a theater, not an amphitheater. If a play or pageant of some type were staged in the Colosseum, the orchestra area would have to be erected, as it was not a standard part of the arena. The Colosseum did not have an orchestra.
