In the southern Mesopotamia the Sumerians developed the first great ancient civilisation. By 3000 BC there were 10 Sumerian city states (e.g. Ur, Uruk) along the banks of the Tigris and the Euphrates.
Sumer (land of the civilized kings) was the first civilization in the Mesopotamian region. Sumerian writing dates back to 3500 BCE with the possibility that the region was settled between 5500 and 4000 BCE. The Sumerians developed and used an ancient form of writing called cuneiform. The Sumerians were eventually conquered, but had a lasting impact on the area.
