The lung surfactant is a substance that coats the internal surfaces of the alveoli (air sacks) of the lungs and prevents them from sticking together in the deflated state when the baby exhales. If the infant is born before it produces lung surfactant, then the alveoli will be unable to be filled with air and the baby will suffocate.
Am pretty sure its called the pulmonary surfactant that's produced from the lungs
type II alveolar cells
between 28 and 30 weeks
what is the name of the liquid layer that lines the alveoli
saponin is not a dye rather it is a surfactant produced by plant.
In the event of surfactant absence in the lungs they would collapse and pulminary functioning would be reduced dramatically. Surfactants are critical in maintaining proper lung function by reducing surface tension and making it easier to breathe.
True; produced by Type II pneumocytes
the placenta
Alveoli does not collapse because lungs always have a residual volume which prevents the alveoli to collapse.
Testosterone is Testosterone - sex hormone responsible for developing male secondary sex characteristics it is produced in the Testicles.
(BPD) Bronchopulmonary dysplasia, a chronic lung disease. Caused by (IRDS) Infant Respiratory Distress Syndrome, infection, or mechanical ventilation. S/S: Stiff, obstructed lungs; hard to ventilate b/c of scarring of alveoli. Goal: To replace damaged alveoli Rx: Supplemental O2, baby will need increased nutritional support every few hours b/c this infant is woking extremely hard to breathe & therefore needs more calories to expend the energy, and also drug therapy like surfactant put into lungs. Often will be premature birth (less than 37 weeks gestational age) & these infants are high risk, and infection prone. B/c this infant was born so early, it can NOT produce surfactant in its lungs like full term babies can (b/c surfactant is produced in the last weeks of gestation & this infant did not get a chance to stay in the womb to produce it), so it will have to be submitted through entubation within 24-48 hrs of being born. Many of these babies will have chronic to severe respiratory problems for the remainder of their lives.
HCG is a glycoprotein hormone produced during pregnancy that is made by the developing embryo after conception and later by the syncytiotrophoblast.
