They are different 'bits' of the same verb, to 'be', in the past tense. It just depends on what pronoun you are using, so:

Singular.

1. I was

2. You were

3. He/She/It was

Plural.

1. We were

2. You were

3. They were

I was going...

You were going...

He was going...

We were going...

You were going...

They were going...
