ill answer the second part first. if the car is running ok and the gas mileage doesnt seem too bad, there isn't a "major problem". I hear that Auto Zone will check codes for you but i think that may only be for OBDII cars. your 92 is not. open the hood and you should be able to locate a grey or black box (about 3/4" x 2") labeled "diagnosis" open the cover and find the 2 terminals corresponding to the inside label "TE1" and "E1" connect the 2 with a jumper wire (any wire that can contact the two terminals and stay in place will work). once the wire is in place, turn the key on (engine not running) and the check engine light should come on, turn off and then flash the codes. its a little hard to describe how to interpret the flashes but ill try. each code is a 2 digit number. after you see the light turn off(see above), it will flash once or a few times fairly quickly, count the number of flashes before it pauses for a second or so. this is the first digit of the code. it will then flash at the same pace then pause again. count these flashes and you have the second digit in the code. note this quickly because if there are any more codes they will continue to flash in the same fashion. continue noting each code until the first code comes up again (this means you have them all). a manual is needed to tell you what the codes mean and how to go about diagnosing the problem. good luck!
To turn off the check engine light on a 1999 Toyota Camry you can disconnect the battery. This will only reset the check engine light. So if there is a persistant problem with the engine, the light is likely going to stay on. To turn off the check engine light on a 1999 Toyota Camry you can disconnect the battery. use a code reader to check the problem and it will reset the light, but if you do not fix the problem the light will continue to come back on.

take your Camry to an Auto Zone parts store, they will hook it up to a diagnostics machine for free. Then you will know what your problem is.
The Check Engine Light has nothing to do with oil changes. It is on because the ECU has detected a problem with the emissions system.
