Freedom of the press
John Peter Zenger was famous for being involved in a libel suit that established Freedom of the Press. He was a newspaper printer and a journalist.
John Peter Zenger was the publisher of New York Weekly Journal. He didn't like colonial governor William Cosby and he used his newspaper to voice his opinions about the governor. He was arrested and charged with seditious libel. There was a trial, Zenger won and the result was Freedom of Press in America. And that is why he is important. Zenger's case established the freedom of press in the United States. This was also pre-Constitution.The Zenger case helped establish the American commitment to freedom of the press.
One of the very first tests of the right/power of a free press in American. Zenger wrote stories critical of a Royal Governor ( William Crosby ) Zenger was jailed but would not name sources. He was charged with libel-- at that time it meant publishing disagreement with the government. Zenger's wife kept publishing ( an news worthy fact in itself ) and was able to have a Crosby packed jury replaced with Zenger's peers. Alexander Hamilton ( already famous ) also stepped forward to be Zenger's lawyer. Zenger was found innocent, and the trial helped pave the way to the 1st amendment. kapm
he was important because he was the 1st famous black person to be rich and famous
Because he was famous..
King Kamehamehal was famous because he conquered the islands of Hawaii and established the longest ruling monarchy in that early nation. He also established a Christian constitutional monarchy during his reign.
No, there are many very famous people who are not very important at all, and many important people who are not very famous at all.
The Zenger trial brought up the issue of Freedom of speech. John Peter Zenger was a German immigrant who printed " The New York Weekly Journal.". Writers submitted articles to the journal that criticized a corrupt royal governor. Although Zenger never wrote an article, he still got thrown in jail. Since the writers were anonymous, Zenger couldn't name them. He was charged with libel for publishing information opposing the government. While on trial, his wife kept the presses running and information about the unfairness of Zenger being tried with a "stacked" jury came to the attention to the public. As a result, a true jury of his peers was seated and Alexander Hamilton, the most famous lawyer in America, stepped up to defend Zenger. True freedom of speech did not happen until the passage of the First Amendment, but this was the start.
It is important but not famous because nobody knows where it goes.
