Try checking the gas cap. if it is not tight, the engine light tends to come on at random times
there are four nuts on the front of the car, they are grounds for the air bags tighten them and the light shuts off
It sounds like a jalopy, or it sounds fine. But, you will probably lose coolant throughout the engine and the coolant will mix with the engine oil. Your low coolant light will probably come on a few times a week.
I am assuming that this is a European Escortand not an American oneIf the fan is running with a cold engine when this problem occursthe most likely fault is the engine coolant temprature sensorthis sensor sends signals to the ECUif the wrong signal is being sent, the Ecu may think the car ishot when infact it is cold so the engine would be getting a very weakfuel mixture this would also cause the cooling fan to cut in on a cold engineI hope this helps a littlebest wishes
A failed computer is possible, It could also be the cluster, wiring, ignition switch, etc.
The fuel pump only runs for a couple seconds after the initial start attempt, then shuts off. Crank the engine for a few seconds. Then turn it off and then do it again for a few more seconds. Do this several times in order to get the fuel to the engine. After a few attempts, the engine should start.. Hope this helps...
the throttle position sensor is bad
If the engine is have trouble turning over at start then there may be a problem with the firing in the inner chambers. If you have a friend that's a handy with engine mechanics you should ask him. However in the short term check the fuel level, are you using the same fuel from last year? You may need to change it.
Go to the local library and obtain a repair manual for any escort up to 1994. Your car has the OBD 1 which is easy to access codes from but you will need the key as there are many codes that can be stored. Basically you take a paper clip and short across the diagnostic link and the engine light will flash but again there is a procedure you need to follow. I have done it many times but not on an Escort; but is is not hard once you get the manual.
My wife's car does the same thing. We have narrowed it down to a worn ignition switch.
Until the connection "times out", yes. However, this won't take long.
I have a 2000 Ford Escort ZX2 with Dual Overhead Cams and a 2.0 4 cylinder engine. When I first started experiencing any trouble it was a lot like you describe. Then the engine would cut off at stops. I had taken it to Ford several times while it was still under warranty and they replaced the ignition coil a couple of times and it worked for a while. After the warranty ran out and I had the problem again (exact same symptoms) I replaced the ingnition coil myself but that time it was a vacuum leak. Hope this helps
