At first, Howe (British Commander) inflicted heavy losses on the colonist's army and forced Washington and his men to evacuate Long Island. If Howe had been fast at traveling, he might have trapped the American army that was stationed in lower Manhattan. However, they escaped. Washington surprised the Hessians and captured or killed 500 men. Only six of Washington's men where wounded, including Lieutenant James Manroe who was supposed to be the future president of America. Americans repelled three regiments of British redcoats before taking refuge ini winter quarters at Morristown. The campaigns of 1776 ended, after British defeats.
