No- the very first cars with mechanical engines (as oppose to those that were pedal, pulley or clockwork powered) ran on steam, and appeared in the late 18th Century. The first cars with chemical combustion engines ran on paraffin or kerosene; kerosine remained a popular fuel into Edwardian times, and the Model T Ford was designed to run on it. Gasoline vehicles were around at the time, but didn't take over in popularity until the time of WW1.
