Sent Sailors to college
Years ago, sailors used to wear an earring in their left ear to indicate they had crossed the equator.
sailors crossed the ocean before engines by using winds, one way they might use trade winds and to come back they might go up and use prevailing westerlies. in different areas of pressure they have different wind directions. Before the arrival of engine driven ships, all propulsion of ships was done by using tall masts, spars, and canvas sails to harness the wind.
The French Fusiliers Marins are part of the navy. Like all other sailors they wear the navy's uniform. You can see a sailor is a fusilier marin by two part of uniform : two crossed rifles on the right sleeve (red for sailors, gold for nco) and in parade unifoem, on the hat, the name of the unit...
The collective noun for 'sailors' is a crew of sailors, whether there are two sailors or hundreds of sailors.
I believe that sailor's got tattoo's of turtles to signify that they had crossed the equator. I have heard that there were all sorts of "rites of passage" ceremonies around this. I am not 100% sure on this, but recall this from a conversation with a sailor.

Pink skies at night, sailors' delight. Pink sky in morning, sailors take warning. Generally, if there is pink in the sky during sunset, the following day will be fair. If there is pink in the sky in the morning, the day is likly to be stormy.
