The story is found in the Old Testament in the Book of Judges Chapter 16 verses 17-19.

So he told her everything. "No razor has ever been used on my head," he said, "because I have been a Nazirite set apart to God since birth. If my head were shaved, my strength would leave me, and I would become as weak as any other man."

When Delilah saw that he had told her everything, she sent word to the rulers of the Philistines, "Come back once more; he has told me everything." So the rulers of the Philistines returned with the silver in their hands. Having put him to sleep on her lap, she called a man to shave off the seven braids of his hair, and so began to subdue him. And his strength left him.

Samson was brought up a Nazirite, a person set aside as holy to give his life to the service of God and others. Part of a Nazirite's vows was that he should not cut his hair. In the story, Samson, who was an immensely strong Jewish hero having killed many of their enemies, the Phillistones, single handedly, was tricked by a woman he fell in love with. The Phillistines paid her to find out the secret of his strength. After several attempts, Samson confessed that the removal of his hair would mean that his oath to God would be broken - he would be a broken man too. Delilah did not cut his hair herself (a common error by those telling the story) but called a servant to do it. Samson lost his strength, he was tortured and blinded by the Phillistines and put into hard labour. Eventually as his hair grew back so did his strength. One day, while being put on exhibition in the Phillistine temple between two pillars, he pushed them apart and brought the whole building crashing down, killing himself and many many of the evil Philistines as well.
