Pope Urban II called on Europeans to join a Crusade against?

Pope Urban II called on Europeans to join a Crusade against the Muslim Turks who controlled the city of Jerusalem and refused to allow Christians access to the holy sites located there. This First Crusade was called in 1095 when he urged Christians to free Jerusalem.

What was a goal of the first crusade?

The goal was to recapture the Holy Land (Palestine) from the Seldjuk Turks. The Turks had defeated the Byzantines in 1071, and took Jerusalem. They persecuted the Chistians. So, the Crusades were military expeditions fought by the Europeans to win back the Holy Land. The First Crusade was called by the Pope (Urban II). The Crusades successfully captured Jerusalem in 1099 and massacred its inhabitants.

Why was there a crusade?

Because in March of 1095, Byzantine Emperor Alexios I Komnenos had petitioned Pope Urban II of the Catholic Church for help in defending his kingdom which was being attacked by Muslim Turks. Emperor Alexios was hoping that western knights could help his kingdom retake the large swaths of land lost to the Turks. The Pope and numerous nobles from Kingdoms and the Church met at the Council of Piacenza to discuss another matter entirely until the ambassador from the Byzantines arrived. This Crusade would serve several purposes, it would assist the Byzantines, thus strengthening relations between the West and East, and would hopefully re-take Jerusalem and other cities from the Muslim Turks, which had been a priority for many Catholic monarchs, but was not shared by Urban II. In otherwords, they tried to take back the Holy Land from the Muslims. But after the final Crusade, The Muslims maintained controll of the Holy Land.

What happened in the peoples crusade?

The People's Crusade was a prelude to the First Crusade that took place in 1096. It was led by Peter the Hermit and consisted of a large army of peasants and commoners who set out for the Holy Land. However, the crusade ended in disaster as the ill-prepared and undisciplined army faced numerous hardships and was swiftly defeated by the Seljuk Turks in Anatolia. Only a small fraction of the original army survived to reach Jerusalem.

Reasons for the start of the fourth crusade?

The loss of the third crusade, and therefore the loss of the holy land.
