Metaphor -- an imaginative comparison NOT using "like" or "as." It is implied or outright stated that one thing IS the other.

Examples:

a) "The moon was a ghostly galleon tossed upon cloudy seas" (from Noyes' "The Highwayman") Two metaphors here!

The metaphor in "The Lady of Shalott" is the weaving of the lady's tapestry as a representation of her isolated existence and inability to directly engage with the world outside her tower. It symbolizes her confinement and detachment from reality, as well as her role as an observer rather than a participant in life.

In the first part it says (stanza 2, line 8) that "and the silent isle embowers (which means surrounds) // the Lady of Shalott"

Also, in stanza 3 it says "but who hath seen her wave her hand? // or at the casement (balcony) see her stand?" this gives a feeling that no one can see her because she is trapped

Moreover in part 2 stanza 1 it explains why she is trapped: she has a curse put upon her so that she can not look out to Camelot, the city across the river, and later in the poem it says that she eventually dies after looking at Camelot. this gives the reason why she is trapped in the isle of Shalott, simply because she can not look out to Camelot, let alone go to it.

Personification in poetry is a non-person presented with the effect of a person. For example, in John Milton's L'Allegro, he wrote, 'Laughter holding both his sides' denoting that 'two laughters walked along with him on either side', though laughter is not a person. That is personification. In Alfred Lord Tennyson's poem The Lady of Shalott, there is no such personification, noted.
