The last name of the Buddha before he became enlightened was Siddhartha. It was after his enlightenment that he was known as Gautama Buddha.
Giving up all desires except for the desire to be enlightened allows your to attain enlightenment which allows you to enter Nirvana on your death (escaping the cycle of death and rebirth). This last step is an option, some enlightened beings choose to return to the cycle of death and rebirth to aid others to become enlightened.
In some scriptures Buddha died peacefully in the forest while laying down. He was tired, so he layed down on a tree stump and rest in peace. In some scriptures it is said that The Buddha died from eating "bad pork" ["pork" is roughly translated as mushroom. :-)]The Buddha became ill one retreat season many years after he became Enlightened. His followers thougbh he would die, but gained some strength. But then they had to travel... He knew he would die within 3 months. And so eventually he ate a meal comprised of some mushrooms picked from beneth a sandalwood tree. He became violently ill and died a few days afterwards after uttering his last testament.
The exaxt amount of days Buddha meditated under the fig tree for is unknown, as various Buddhist texts have conflicting opinions. However, the most widely accepted amount of days is 49 days - or 7 weeks. Then again, some texts say 6 days, and others say 6 years. An descendant of the tree remains today known as the Bodhi Tree.Buddha left the palace at 29, soon after he seeks apprenticeship from two masters. Before he was declared 'the enlightened one', at the age of 36, Buddha actually meditated 49 days. It is the final step which would led to 'the enlightened one'. However it is not yet known whether did any of those time outside 49 days he actually contribute to the journey to being enlightened. you know what i mean, he learned from those masters the way to meditate, maybe from those learning did he already started the journey. Or thus maybe the real meditating began in the last 49 days you know. Do you see??
Gautama Buddha, the historical Buddha, lived in northeast India between 563 and 483 BC. As a bodhisattva he had passed through thousands of existences before coming to Earth for his ultimate transmigration. This last lifetime he began as a son of the King of the Sakya, Suddhodana, who ruled at Kapilavastu on the border of Nepal, and was born in a village called Lumbini into the warrior tribe called the Sakyas (from where he derived the title Sakyamuni, meaning "Sage of the Sakyas").
