matter and energy
A formula is something which shows a relationship between two or more things. A formula will contain variables and may also contain constants too and it tells us the relationship between them. The answer to the question is that you square a number if, and only if, the relationship between the variables (or constants) requires the number to be squared. For example in the famous formula e = mc2 , here we must square the constant, the speed of light in a vacuum (c), in order to calculate energy (e). It has to be squared because that constitutes the relationship between the values and there is no option to ignore that.
The gravitational potential energy doesn't actually reside in a single object, but in the relationship between two objects. Thus, there is a gravitational potential energy between Earth and Moon, or between a rock that you lift up on the Moon, and the Moon. The gravitational potential energy doesn't actually reside in a single object, but in the relationship between two objects. Gravitational + Potential = 100 If you have 67 J of potential energy your gravitational energy would be 33 J.
You use it to put fuel in your car and heat your home with the energy it produces.

Albert Einstien
E=hv where E is energy, v is frequency, and h is 6.626x10^-34 relates the energy of a photon to the photon's frequency.
The relationship between the two is their energy source which is the sun.
there is a relationship they produce temperature.
For example, for gravitational potential energy, the relationship is: PE = weight x height Or the equivalent: PE = mass x gravity x height
It ends up with energy
Thermodynamics is the study of the relationship between thermal energy and heat and work.
There are none.
