The Bronze Star Medal could be awarded for either "meritorious service" or for "valor". If the award was for valor, the Medal was awarded with a bronze "V device" to be worn on the ribbon of the Medal. After the war was over the Army decided that every WWII veteran was entitled to the Bronze Star Medal, but the award was for "meritorious service", not "valor", so no "V device".
I only know of the awards for Operation Sea Signal back in 1994. They are The Humanitarian Service medal (an individual award). The Joint Meritorious unit Citation, and the Coast Guard Meritorious unit Citation.
The medal is properly called: "Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal", and one does not personally apply for the award. One must be recommended for the award by a higher authority, such as a commanding officer.
